Mothers of a Nation photography exhibition and gallery talk
A discussion with filmmaker Danielle Bernstein, Clear Films
Photographs by Ansley West

Mothers of a Nation is a photography and film project about HIV infected women in Jinja, Uganda, who have empowered themselves through farming projects.

These inspiring women remind us of the power of creativity, while educating others worldwide about the importance of home gardens and sustainable agriculture. Their ability to improve family income and stability, and call attention to the role nutrition plays in combating disease, is a model for emulation and a reminder of the power we all have to transform our destinies.

In her gallery talk, Danielle will discuss her view on the re-emergence of purposeful media, and her approach to raising awareness of pressing issues and global phenomenon through film, photography, and creative organization-building.

The Mothers of a Nation exhibition and talks will be in the Cinematheque's gallery space, which is open and free to the public.

Cook County

Friday, November 6 | 22:00

Cook County (93 min)
Followed by a Q&A with David Pomes,
Writer & Director of Cook County

Xander Berkeley, Anson Mount and Ryan Donowho explode on the screen in this visceral tale about three generations of meth addicts living in the piney woods of East Texas.

Living in a small town and amongst a house full of crystal meth abusers, seventeen year-old Abe (Donowho) wrestles to beat an addiction to meth and struggles to protect himself and his young niece from an abusive Uncle Bump (Mount).

When Sonny (Berkeley) returns home from prison seeking redemption from his son, Abe, the two must navigate the treacherous waters created by Bump, who will do almost anything to maintain a dangerous lifestyle fueled by crystal meth.

The tension and suspense build up to an electrifying ending where harrowing choices are made by all three men leading each of them to a different fate.

Unlike any other movie, Cook County unflinchingly tells a raw and real story of rural life where crystal meth dictates the family dynamic. It is a true portrait of
desperate life in modern small-town America.

Media That Matters Festival Selection (60 min)
Followed by the b(art) panel discussion on Independent Film & Social Change

The Media That Matters Film Festival is the premiere showcase for short films on the most important topics of the day. Local and global, online and in communities around the world, Media That Matters engages diverse audiences and inspires them to take action.

The jury-selected collection represents the work of a diverse group of independent filmmakers. The films are equally diverse in style and content, with documentaries, music videos, animations, experimental work and everything else in between. What all the films have in common is that they spark debate and action in 12 minutes or less.

Every June, Media That Matters presents a new collection of twelve shorts. The festival launches in New York City with a World Premiere at the SVA Visual Arts Theater and an Awards Ceremony at HBO where every filmmaker is honored and many receive cash awards sponsored by major foundations and corporations. Previous presenters include Tim Robbins, Al Franken, David Cross, Woody Harrelson, Barbara Kopple and Peter Yarrow. The festival launch also includes the Media as a Tool for Social Change Workshop, a unique convening of filmmakers, educators, activists, nonprofits and youth.
